A WORLD OF COLOR

No new color system. No compromises.

Description

PRIMO STRATO is a mineral-based primer designed for both interior and exterior use. Made with lime, marble, and quartz, it creates a textured, absorbent surface that locks onto the substrate and provides the perfect base for plaster application.

This primer is the recommended basecoat for all of our finishes. It is highly effective on concrete, stucco, plaster, cement board, and drywall, ensuring excellent adhesion between the substrate and the decorative finish. Primo Strato™ is also ideal for walls previously painted with emulsion or enamel paints, giving you a consistent foundation for your chosen finish.

Application
01
Prepare the Surface
Surface must be clean, dry, and free of dust, oil, grease, and loose material. Fill any cracks or irregularities and allow repairs to cure fully before proceeding.
02
Dilute if Required
PRIMO STRATO is ready to use straight from the bucket on most surfaces. On new drywall, it can be diluted up to 25% with clean water to aid penetration into the substrate.
03
Apply
Apply one even coat using a brush or short-nap roller. Work in sections and maintain a wet edge to avoid lap marks. Ensure full, consistent coverage across the entire surface.
04
Allow to Dry
Allow PRIMO STRATO to dry fully before applying your first coat of lime plaster. Drying time varies with temperature and humidity. The surface should feel completely dry and non-tacky to the touch.

Compatible Surfaces
  • New and existing drywall / gypsum board
  • Concrete and cement board
  • Brick and masonry
  • Existing plaster and stucco
  • Previously painted surfaces (sound and clean)
  • Exterior substrates
  • Surfaces with active moisture or efflorescence
  • Glossy or non-porous surfaces without sanding
Important Notes
  • One coat is sufficient on most surfaces. Do not apply a second coat in place of allowing the first to dry fully.
  • On new drywall, dilute up to 25% with clean water. On denser or previously painted surfaces, apply undiluted for maximum adhesion.
  • Do not apply lime plaster over PRIMO STRATO until it is completely dry. Applying over a damp primer is a common cause of adhesion failure.
  • For exterior use, ensure the substrate is structurally sound and free of active water ingress before priming.
  • Refer to the PRIMO STRATO Safety Data Sheet for full handling, PPE, and disposal requirements.

Frequently Asked
Lime plasters require a prepared, bonded surface to adhere correctly. Without a proper primer, the substrate can absorb moisture unevenly from the plaster, leading to poor adhesion, cracking, or delamination. PRIMO STRATO is a micro-granular quartz primer, meaning it does not just seal the surface — it creates a fine textured profile that the lime plaster locks into mechanically. This is what gives Violante plasters their long-term durability.
We recommend PRIMO STRATO because it is specifically formulated to work with our lime plasters. Generic bonding primers or PVA sealers can reduce porosity too aggressively or leave a surface that is too smooth for lime plaster adhesion. If you use a third-party primer, test adhesion on a small area first and ensure it is compatible with lime-based products before proceeding.
Drying time varies depending on temperature, humidity, and substrate porosity. In normal conditions, expect 2 to 4 hours. In cooler or more humid environments, allow longer. The surface should feel completely dry and non-tacky before applying your first coat of plaster. When in doubt, wait longer — applying over damp primer is a common cause of adhesion issues.
Not usually. PRIMO STRATO is ready to use straight from the bucket on most surfaces. The exception is new drywall, where the paper face can be highly absorbent — in this case, diluting up to 25% with clean water helps the primer penetrate evenly. On previously painted or denser surfaces, apply undiluted.
Yes. PRIMO STRATO is suitable for both interior and exterior use. For exterior applications, ensure the substrate is structurally sound, free of active moisture, and fully cured before priming. Protect the primed surface from rain until dry.
Once PRIMO STRATO is completely dry you can begin your first coat of plaster. There is no maximum window — if the primer has been applied and dried, it remains effective. If the primed surface gets wet or is exposed to heavy dust before plastering, clean and allow to dry again before proceeding.
